WHAT IS DUNGEONS & DRAGONS?

Dungeons & Dragons produces many images in the minds of its fans. Some may wish to recall the illustrations of Erol Otus, David A. Trampier, Bill Willingham, David C. Sutherland III, Jeff Easley, or more modern artists like Wayne Reynolds and Ralph Horsley when they think of the game that inspires their imaginations, but I assign one man to that task: Larry Elmore.

Now, there are some people in the community, especially those of the "old-school" variety, who are vehemently anti-Elmore, and I can understand their opinions. Many of his paintings do look "staged" and some of his models look "stiff," but to me, nothing inspires my imagination like these paintings:
